Asda Stores is the latest company in the retail sector to turn to older workers to fill the gap being caused by the shortage of young people coming on to the labour market.

Last month it launched a recruitment drive targeted at those within the 50-70 age range. It aims to boost the percentage of its workforce who are over 55 from 2.6 per cent to more than 6 per cent within a year.
